Anstruther Restaurants: 7 Delicious Places To Eat in Anstruther

Looking for the most delicious Anstruther restaurants? My round up of the best places to eat in Anstruther includes 7 of the best Anstruther restaurants, from casual cafes to seaside fish & chips.

As you might expect from the biggest town in Fife’s East Neuk, there are heaps of utterly delicious Anstruther restaurants, cafes, gastro pubs, and, of course, chip shops to choose from.

Whilst you might be tempted to make a beeline to those along the harbour, also check out the eateries tucked further back and along the side streets. These often have better reviews, relying on excellent food and service rather than an enviable harbourside position.

From family-friendly cafes to more sophisticated fine dining restaurants, to casual yet delicious seafood spots, there’s a whole range of fantastic food to choose from in Anstruther.

Ready to tuck in to Anstruther’s best restaurants? Let’s go!

Best Anstruther restaurants & cafes

This list of Anstruther restaurants (in no particular order) includes my personal favourites and some of the best places to eat in Anstruther, for every type of trip:

1. The Anstruther Fish Bar

No trip to Anstruther would be complete without a visit to the iconic fish & chip shop, The Anstruther Fish Bar. This is a favourite with locals and visitors alike; there’s a constant stream of people outside.

My advice is to skip the frequently enormous queue and order takeaway fish & chips. Weather permitting, enjoy on one of the benches, or beaches, overlooking the harbour. Just watch out for chip-stealing seagulls!

Inside, the atmosphere is causal and lively and if you are lucky enough to get a table, then order a ‘traditional fish tea’ – the star of the show, expect flaky battered fish, crisp fluffy chips, bread & butter, mushy peas, all served with a pot of tea.

After, be sure to enjoy a gelato from wonderfully authentic Brattesani’s - Anstruther’s ice cream parlour is found inside the Fish Bar and serves a range of delicious flavours of gelato.

The Anstruther Fish Bar is open every day and you should expect to queue at the weekend or bank holidays – no reservations mean tables are first-come-first-served.

2. The Wee Chippy

If you want to devour Fife’s famous fish & chips, but don’t want to wait in the often-crazy queues at the Anstruther Fish Bar, then try the Wee Chippy at the other end of the high street. The fish here is tasty and the chips equally so.

If there’s a negative, it’s that the service at the Wee Chippy can be hit or miss (in my experience). But the food is undeniably good. Sit in, outside overlooking the marina, or use the back lane for takeaway. Open every day for lunch and dinner, you can also book a table.

3. Dreel Tavern

If you’re looking for an Anstruther restaurant more varied menu, then check out the wonderful 18th-century Dreel Tavern. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the restaurant itself is housed within a wonderfully historic space full of wooden beams and cosy corners. Plus the outdoors beer garden is super cute with its seaside themed beach huts and relaxed vibe.

The menu is seasonal, diverse, and often unexpected, with lots of delicious options. Whilst I could have devoured the entire menu, I chose a selection of small plates instead - the mackerel rillette, AMAZING dukkha hummus, truffle fries, and the very quirky (and delicious) ham, quail egg & chips.

The Dreel Tavern is open Wednesday to Sunday, and you should book a table especially at weekends.

4. The Cellar

For a truly special dining experience in Anstruther, book a table at The Cellar.

Though I haven’t eaten here yet, it is on my foodie bucket list and comes highly recommended. This Michelin starred restaurant offers a multi-course tasting menu featuring the best of Fife’s coastline and countryside produce.

The Cellar menu changes daily, based on seasonal produce, and the freshest ingredients available - sourced from local growers, farms, and producers.

As this is a fine dining experience, expect a higher price tag but also a unique foodie journey through Fife’s wonderful larder.

Book your table well in advance here.

5. Barnett’s Bakery

Fife’s renowned and exceptionally popular family bakery, Barnett’s Bakery serves up all sorts of tasty treats. It’s famous for its artisan breads, but don’t overlook its freshly made sandwiches, sausage rolls, traditional pies, and delicious oatcakes. If you’re looking for a casual takeaway lunch in Anstruther, this is an excellent option and especially helpful for those walking the Fife Coastal Path.

Open Monday to Saturday, arrive early or risk empty shelves.

6. Bread & Butter Café

Alternatively, this small but very funky café is the perfect option to sit in. Friendly people, delicious breakfast rolls, and seriously good coffee, there’s also a counter of freshly baked cakes. The interior is simple and rustic, with a relaxed vibe despite the busy tables.

As I visited early in the day, I sadly didn’t get to sample the buddha bowl or loaded nachos – but it comes highly recommended for lunch as well as breakfast.

Open Thursday to Sunday.

Find it here.

7. The Grind Airstream Cafe

Just outside of the main town, this funky food truck at quaint Cellardyke is definitely one to make a point of visiting. A hidden gem, they serve good coffee, even better cakes, and toasties.

There’s a handful of tables outside with wonderful sea views, so if you’re looking for a coastal café, make it this one!

The Grind is open daily from 10am till 4pm. Find it here
