10 Best Restaurants in Portree, Isle of Skye (2025)

We’ve recently returned from a weekend getaway in Portree on Skye - and the town’s thriving foodie scene was a real highlight. In this guide I’m sharing the best restaurants in Portree, on the magical Isle of Skye.

By: Lesley Stewart | Updated March 2025

When it comes to where to eat in Portree, Isle of Skye, you’ll find endless options. This little Scottish island is a serious culinary destination, and Portree is, in many ways, its beating heart. There’s everything here, from fine-dining seafood to casual pizzerias, and foodies will love exploring Portree’s best restaurants.

I’m lucky to live in the Scottish Highlands, and Portee’s eateries are almost on my doorstep. So I know the best places to eat in Portree - and those to avoid!

During my last weekend trip to the harbour town, we discovered some new finds and were generally blown away by the amount of really great places to eat; Skye’s capital may be small, but it sure packs a punch on the culinary stage.

One of the things I love most is the vibrant mix of traditional Scottish fare and innovative cuisine. I love that you can have a diverse experience, from dining at upscale restaurants to wood-fired pizza, and that both blend beautifully.

That is to say, there’s a restaurant to suit everyone in Portree.

However, the best restaurants in Portree ALL have one thing in common - their dishes are made with the freshest Skye produce and a deep respect for local ingredients, with chefs championing the isle’s natural larder.

Think locally sourced venison, fish caught that day in local waters, and veg, cheese, and bread from nearby producers.

When helping travellers book their Skye trip, I always recommend at least one night in harbourfront Portree.

Alongside charming Carbost, Portree is easily one of the best Skye towns for first-time visitors, with plenty of things to do. The foodie scene offers enormous appeal, and there are plenty of incredible places to eat, all serving utterly brilliant food.

And, unlike many of the wild and remote Skye peninsulas, Portree’s restaurants are easily accessible, with most only a short walk from the town centre, Portree’s stylish hotels, and lively whisky bars.

So, here is my list of the best restaurants in Portree and a few recommendations for making the most of your experience.

Portree’s Best Restaurants

  1. Dulce & Brose (a modern take on Scottish classics)

  2. Chargrill (chic steak and seafood grill)

  3. Scorrybreac (upscale seafood and fine-dine Scottish classics)

  4. Gasta Port Righ (epic wood-fired pizza)

  5. Caberfeidh (pizza, burgers, and cocktails)

  6. Birch (brunch, lunch, and coffee)

  7. The Isles Inn (traditional Scottish classics)

  8. Cuchullin (affordable seafood)

  9. Sea Breezes (casual seafood)

  10. Antlers Grill (lively gastro-pub)

Skye tip/ Above is a quick guide to the best restaurants in Portree, but below are menus and table booking links. My top tip is to book ahead; Portree can get busy, especially at weekends and during the summer, and the most popular restaurants are on every traveller’s list (for good reason). Therefore, a table reservation is essential.

The 10 Best Restaurants in Portree, Skye

Ready to eat somewhere amazing in Portree? Let’s go!

1. Dulse & Brose

Address: 13 Bosville Terrace, Portree IV51 9DG

Best for: local produce and a stylish yet relaxed setting

This Portree eatery is easily one of my favourite places to eat in the town. In fact, I’ve eaten here three times and it always delivers on excellent food.

Specialising in modern Scottish cuisine, the seasonal menu reflects Skye’s amazing larder, using the best produce from sea and land. Everything from venison to seafood and even cheese is locally sourced. This gives a real sense of place, and it’s a beautiful ethos that really connects you to the island.

The menu is ever-changing but varied and influenced by the seasons.

On our last visit, we loved the smoked duck and orange salad and perfectly flaking haddock in the fish & chips, though the seared venison loin with buttery fondant potatoes was perhaps the real winner. For a real treat, follow with a decadent dessert or indulge in the Scottish cheese platter (my personal favourite).

This restaurant in Portree is one of the most relaxed, and it stands out for its perfect blend of stylish yet casual.

Upstairs, the Bosville Hotel is a stylish spot to stay. Next door, The Merchant Bar serves dangerously good cocktails and local beers and has one of the island's largest collections of single-malt whisky.

There are so many bottles to choose from that it’s somewhat overwhelming, even for a whisky fan like me. I asked the friendly bar staff for their recommendations, and they were only too happy to share their knowledge; rest assured, help is on hand to help you select the perfect dram!

2. Chargrill

Address: Marmalade Hotel, Home Farm Rd, Portree, IV51 9LX

Best for: steak and seafood in a chic setting

Meet grill and sides specialist Chargrill, one of Portree's most beautiful dining spaces. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the town’s lesser-known eateries.

You’ll find Chargrill tucked away inside the uber-stylish Marmalade Hotel. Located on the edge of the town, I’ll be honest, even I didn’t know it was there until our weekend getaway. But wow, what an incredible dining experience.

The menu is inspired by Skye’s local larder (I loved the list of local suppliers), and dishes are based around perfectly grilled steak, chicken, veg, and seafood.

Meanwhile, the vast array of accompanying sides are an absolute work of genius - veggies, salads, fries, and grains, all with unique twists and big, bold flavours.

The menu is varied and features a host of crowd-pleasing favourites. So, if you’re a foodie like me, expect to over-order!

By the time our food arrived, our table was packed with all sorts of delicious eats; we highly recommend the cornfed chicken with corn puree & charred corn, and the mouthwatering rib eye steak.

With an equally fantastic wine menu, lovely views, and contemporary design, it’s little wonder that this Portree restaurant (and hotel) made our exclusive ‘Scotland Handpicked’ list.

Chargrill is open to residents and non-residents, is an easy 5-minute walk from town, and, as always, I recommend booking a table.

3. Scorrybreac

Address: 7 Bosville Terrace, Portree IV51 9DG

Best for: local seafood in a fine-dining setting

Occupying a lofty position above Portree harbour, this highly rated seafood eatery offers sweeping views over the iconic colourful houses, as well as a beautifully crafted menu.

Inside, the decor is elegant, simple, and as beautiful as its surrounding scenery.

The menu is based on fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a dash of fine-dining culinary flair. Expect incredible seafood dishes, venison, and locally foraged plants and shoreline sea vegetables.

Bookings are most definitely necessary for this Portree restaurant - Scorrybreac has been on my Skye bucket list for the longest time simply because I keep missing out on a table! A popular eatery with limited nightly covers, dinner is available from 5pm to 10pm, Wednesday through Saturday.

4. Gasta Port Righ

Address: Isle of Skye Candle Co. Visitor Centre, Portree IV51 9EU

Best for: authentic wood-fired pizzas

You’ll find Gasta Port Righ tucked away inside the beautiful Isle of Skye Candle Co., just outside town.

It’s one of the best spots for breakfast or brunch and serves excellent coffee, morning rolls, croissants, loaded ciabattas, and bagels. I recommend visiting early and tagging a little shopping trip in the beautiful candle store.

But this Portree restaurant's speciality is pizza - and they are seriously delicious. Authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas with an array of toppings, such as venison salami, prosciutto, roast vegetables, apple chutney, and a variety of Italian cheeses.

Inside, the decor is contemporary, and the restaurant is spacious, airy, and light. A small bar serves local beers and cocktails, but the enormous wood-fired pizza oven is the star of the show! I particularly enjoyed the warm and friendly atmosphere, and it’s an excellent spot for a casual late lunch or dinner.

Gasta Port Righ is an all-day eatery that serves food from 9am to 9pm daily. We grabbed a table without a reservation but I recommend booking a table. To get there, drive or taxi from town in about 5 minutes or it's a leisurely 20-minute stroll with waterside views.

5. Caberfeidh Restaurant

Address: Somerled Square, Portree IV51 9EH

Best for: pizza, cocktails, and modern interiors

This smart eatery is another delicious Portree pizza option, but this time in the town centre. Caberfeidh is also one of the most modern eateries in Portree, with a quirky drinks menu and boujee vibe that sets it apart from other options on our list.

Inside, it’s a trendy, chic, dark spot, with cosy sofas upholstered in velvet and high oak tables completing the speakeasy look.

The restaurant specialises in sourdough pizza with a variety of toppings, including artichoke, salami, and wild mushrooms. There are burgers too, fries, and a small selection of sides. Equally stylish is the funky little cocktail bar that serves the best martinis; even if you don’t eat here, visit for the cocktails.

A relaxed, vibey place, Caberfeidh is perfect for a casual bite or evening drink.

6. Birch

Address: Bayfield Rd, Portree IV51 9EL

Best for: brunch, lunch, and cake & coffee

Now, Birch is a cafe, so you might wonder why it's on a restaurant list. The answer is pretty simple - it's my go-to eatery in Portree for brunch and lunch and one of the best coffee shops on Skye.

Alongside their small-batch coffee, Birch serves a small but delicious menu, and the food is fresh, modern, and seriously good. Dishes include scrambled eggs, chorizo, and parmesan on sourdough (my personal favourite) and the pastry selection is another level; I recommend a classic cinnamon buns - truly delicious!

Inside, the cafe is small with limited seating, but it looks busy, don’t worry - you can take coffee and food away.

Skye travel tip: I frequently visit Birch in the morning before a Skye road trip, meaning I have lunch on hand when I’m busy exploring. This is a perfect option if you’re visiting the Trotternish Loop, which has many of Skye’s iconic sights (such as the Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock) but has limited eating options.

7. The Isles Inn

Address: Somerled Square, Portree IV51 9EH

Best for: tasty pub grub and local beers

Without doubt, the Isles Inn is the best Portree restaurant for solid, tasty pub grub done well.

It’s also a great option for first-time visitors to Scotland looking for classic Scottish dishes - we recommend this eatery to our US, English, and Australian clients seeking that traditional setting, who’ve loved, amongst other things, the iconic haggis, neeps, and tatties.

The Isles Inn is a pub-come-restaurant, so the vibe is mellow and the decor cosy. There’s a roaring fire, frequent live music from local musicians, whisky, and Skye-crafted beers.

Be aware, there’s no table bookings (unless you’re a resident) and it does get busy, but it’s worth visiting for both food and for drinks.

8. Cuchullin Restaurant

Address: Wentworth Street, Portree IV51 9EJ

Best for: reasonably priced seafood

While there’s a reasonably extensive menu at the Cuchullin, seafood is the speciality at this Portree restaurant. Mains include oysters, scallops, mussels, langoustines, and an impressive seafood platter.

We haven’t eaten here yet, but reviews are consistently excellent.

They generally don’t take bookings, but if you phone or private message their Facebook page, they may be able to accommodate.

9. Sea Breezes

Address: Quay St, Portree IV51 9DE

Best for: seafood on the pier

If waterside views are your thing, Sea Breezes is the restaurant in Portree for you. Located in the heart of the iconic harbour, diners can enjoy incredible views over Portree Loch from this pier-side eatery.

As you might expect, the menu here is primarily seafood. Expect Skye mussels followed by scallops, monkfish scampi with fries, and the catch of the day from local fishing boats.

Tables are limited, and there are even fewer by the window (which is where you really want to sit), so be sure to book in advance.

10. Antlers Bar & Grill

Address: Portree Hotel, Somerled Square, Portree

Best for: buzzy vibe and a crowd-pleasing menu

You’ll find this vibrant restaurant inside the Portree Hotel in the town centre. It’s a great spot for a casual dinner in a lively setting, especially if you’re looking to follow food with a G&T or beer.

There’s a varied menu packed full of crowd-pleasing pub grub, like a Highland beef burger and fish chips. But there are also delicious gastro options on offer, like the slow-cooked blade of beef and confit duck. Be sure to check out the specials menu, too - I ate the most delicious grilled scallops with black pudding while here.

Whilst they welcome walk-ins, it’s a popular spot, so book in advance to guarantee a table.
