The Scottish Highlands

Visiting The Scottish Highlands

Few places evoke a sense of adventure like the Scottish Highlands - a sweeping region of elemental landscapes and some of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Stretching across around 26,500 square kilometres, the Highlands are immense. Attempting to see everything in a single trip usually means spending far too much time behind the wheel. So, the most rewarding itineraries focus on one or two areas, allowing time to explore properly rather than rushing between distant locations.

Highlands Guides

Our Highlands guide brings together a growing collection of places to see, stay, eat, and experience across the region.

To the west, most easily accessible from Edinburgh, notable stops include Fort William, Glencoe, and Glenfinnan. To the northwest, there are few main hubs, but Ullapool and Lochinver are the largest and offer easy access to the far north's more remote, epic landscapes. To the east, Inverness and Dornoch make terrific bases.

Of course, Scotland’s most famous road trip, the North Coast 500, provides a satisfying loop around the top. But there are West Coast routes and island-hopping adventures to be had here, too.

To help you navigate such a vast area, our guides are organised into regions and road trips - routes and destinations that naturally fit together geographically.

The Highlands are my home; I hope this guide helps you discover a few of its remarkable corners for yourself.
